Celebrated on December 11th annually, International Mountain Day is an international observance day whose goal is to raise awareness about the role that mountainous regions play in the lives of people and their importance to our planet. On December 20th, 2002, the United Nations designated December 11 as International Mountain Day. "Thinking like a mountain" is the term coined by Aldo Leopold in his book A Sand County Almanac and our focus-inspiration as we host our second celebration of International Mountain Day at Radnor Lake State Natural Area. This strenuous hike will start at 800 Old Hickory Blvd at one of our newest tracts of land known as the Mantra Tract. From there, we will hike thru 29 new acres of land thanks to the partnership between the State of Tennessee and Friends of Radnor Lake's efforts the past 18 months. This unique 2+ hour strenuous hike will be limited to 20 visitors, is for ages 13 and up with registration required to attend this hike. No pets allowed. Hiking poles and good shoes are recommended for this volunteer day as this hike to and from our project area entails a 150-200 ft contour climb to and from the ridgetops from our parking area off Old Hickory Blvd. Please note anyone late to this hike will be unable to attend as we will leave promptly at 1pm out of respect for our participants and staff time.
